Craig Hawkins is a young winemaker based in the Swartland, South Africa, where he works about 11ha of vineyard. Having worked at estates throughout Europe Craig eventually spent time at the renowned Clos Matassa in the hills of the Coteaux du Fenouillèdes, in the Roussillon region of France. It was here that winemaker Tom Lubbe had a big impact on the way that Craig would make wine back in South Africa.
On returning to South Africa Craig worked as wine maker for Lammershoek where he would meet his future wife and partner Carla. In 2015 Craig and Carla turned the garage project of Testalonga (going since 2008) into a stand-alone winery with the purchase of a farm. He now makes a huge variety of different wines under his own Testalonga label. Very much a maverick in South Africa and with a huge following across the world the wines of Testalonga vary from the quaffable, playful delights to the challenging and bold. Testalonga really represents the positive movement of low intervention wines in the new world.
Fresh apples and lemon on the nose lead on to riper fruit in the mouth. Lovely freshness and acidity with an off-dry finish. This wine was made with the clear purpose of putting a smile on your face. It’s easy drinking charms and smashability make it a shoe in for gatherings. A cracker from Testalonga!
