About Azienda Agricola Cortese
The Cortese Vineyards situated in the Ragusa region of southern Sicily have been in the capable hands of Northern Italian winemaker Stefano Girelli since 2016. Originally owned by Giovanna Cortese, the vineyards were sold to Stefano when Giovanna decided the land was too much for her to manage. The winery was modernised but many of the indigenous grape varieties were kept. Stefano wanted the wines of Cortese to truly represent the unique soils and landscape of Sicily.
After hand harvesting, the grapes are refrigerated for 24 hours. The grapes are de-stemmed then fermented on their skins for at least 2 days, before completing the fermentation in oak barrels. After fermentation the wine is allowed to rest on the lees for at least 7 months and is aged in bottle for 6 months before release. This is a serious wine with limited availability.
Tasting notes
Tropical fruit flavours and a hint of vanilla and spices. Rich on the palate with crisp acidity. This is a wonderfully complex wine and the small amount of skin contact it has has gives depth and weight. Wonderful wine from a modern producer.
