About Ego Bodegas & 44 Group
I would hope for many the 44 group needs no introduction! Started by Owen and Tom Morgan in 2002 their Spanish Tapas restaurants and Parrilla grill restaurant, Asador44, are not only adored by the people of Cardiff, Penarth, Cowbridge, Bristol and beyond, but also by renowned critics such as Tom Parker Bowles and Fiona Beckett (people that REALLY know their food). Walking into one of their restaurants is akin to a magical gateway that transports you to a cherished memory of Spain. As you can tell we are fans!
As for the Bodegas, set up 10 years ago Bodegas Ego is located in the heart of Jumilla, between the high plains of La Mancha and the Mediterranean to the east. These two features have a great influence on the climate - largely continental, this is a very warm region for growing grapes - with long, hot summers and cool, wet winters. These are ideal conditions for the native Monastrell (known as Mourvèdre in France) grape, which naturally ripens slowly and has thicker skins than many grapes giving perfect defence against these extreme conditions.
On the nose a big hit of ripe cherries and some bramble fruit, a little sweet spice and a herbal hint. The mouth feel is rich and silky with lovely ripe fruit and a hint of vanilla from the 3 months in oak. The tannins are beautifully soft and integrated. Great length on the finish!
